Clinical Services :
The clinical service of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology teaching hospital is large and growing and has a long tradition of major contributions in basic research, a new commitment to clinical and outcomes research, a track record of training fellows for academic careers, and a longitudinal commitment to providing care for patients with complex gastrointestinal and liver diseases. It provides a service in luminal gastroenterology for patients who predominantly come from Baghdad and all over Iraq. All aspects of gastroenterology are managed by the department for example, appreciable numbers of patients with undiagnosed abdominal pain, gastrointestinal malignancy, inflammatory bowel disease, functional bowel disorders, biliary tract disease, end-stage liver diseases, and gastrointestinal complications of immuno suppression are evaluated. The hospital collaborates extensively with expert services within the Medical City - in particular the departments of Surgery, Histopathology, Radiology, and Oncology. The hospital has extensive facilities for gastrointestinal endoscopy for Patients with complex gastrointestinal and liver diseases that present major diagnostic and therapeutic challenges are seen at the hospital including endoluminal ultrasound. There is a plan to introduce gastrointestinal function laboratory, with manometry, both oesophageal and rectal, together with functional testing including oesophageal and gastric motility.
The Specialised hospital for Gastroenterology & Hepatology is integrated facility of Medical City as a 100 -bed teaching hospital.
The new Hepatology research and treatment national centre will be basedin the hospital and will develop advanced research and treatment activities in collaboration with the ministry of health.
Clinical activities have increased significantly over the past few years. ,yearly more than 5,000 endoscopic and other GI procedures (including upper and lower endoscopy , ERCP ,dilation , stenting), 1500 inpatient and over 11,000 outpatient GI consultations are performed annually.
